1.3.3
Elevator Systems

Lesson Overview

This lesson will introduce elevator systems as a key component of a vertical circulation system. We will look at types of elevator hoisting systems, elevator cabs and operations as well as the deployment of elevators as part of a building core.

Lesson Goals

The goal of the lesson is to provide you with a basic introduction to elevator systems, their types and mechanics and their applicability in different building contexts. The lesson should provide you with the knowledge to make fundamental choices in selecting an elevator system and the spatial requirements and strategies for coordinating an elevator (or elevators) within a building core and as part of a comprehensive plan design. The lesson will also introduce how elevator shaft construction may play an integral role in an overall building structural system. Lastly, the lesson will introduce the relative costs of elevators in buidlings with the goal of empowering you to make the right choice when considering whether to include elevators in your project design.
