INTRODUCTION TO YOUR TEACHING TEAM

Mick Kennedy

Mick Kennedy is a native of Houston, Texas, where he received his training in Small Engine Repair at Harris County Community College.  He received his graduate architectural degree from the University of Texas at Austin and is a practicing architect in Texas and in Michigan where he teaches courses in furniture design, fabrication, housing design, and building construction at the Taubman College of Architecture.  His design practice focuses on community design-build projects in Southwest Detroit and Austin, Texas.  With Maria Cotera, he was a founding member of El Museo del Norte in Detroit and continues to serve on their Board. Along with his partner, the amazing Mike Smith, he founded the office Two Guys from Texas in Austin. Their current work is centered on the design and construction of micro houses for the homeless in East Austin.  When he isn’t working he plays the accordion.

Peter von Bülow

Peter von Bülow has worked professionally in both architecture and engineering offices in Germany and the United States, including RFR-Stuttgart, Greiner Engineering, and SL-Rasch. He is licensed in both engineering and architecture in Germany. He also spent a year at the University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Lightweight Studies under Frei Otto. Later he returned to Stuttgart to complete a Doctorate in Engineering under Werner Sobek. He also holds two degrees from the University of Tennessee: a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Architecture. His area of research focuses on the use of evolutionary computation for exploration and optimization of structural systems. Some of von Bülow's research work involved contracts with the U.S. Air Force for the development and blast testing of thin-shell, lightweight personnel shelters.

Lars Junghans

Lars Junghans is an associate professor of architecture at Taubman College who conducts interdisciplinary research work including aspects of economics, decision theory, statistics, design optimization, and building physics. His research is focused on the development and optimization of net zero emissions high-performance buildings with a comprehensive view of all aspects of the building’s thermal behavior, including passive and active strategies. His goal is to find holistic optimal solutions that are simultaneously sustainable, affordable, and applicable within all climate zones. A primary focus of the research is the integration of predictive control systems into buildings, as seen in Junghans’ building “22/26” in Austria (architect D.Eberle), the first office building in a cold climate without a conventional mechanical heating, cooling, and ventilation system.

Areej Shahin (GSI)

Meet Areej Shahin, one of the two GSIs for the ARC 527 course. Areej is in her final semester of a Master of Architecture program and has a passion for teaching and mentoring students. Areej is interested in the social, cultural, and environmental impact of architecture on our lifestyle, as well as how it shapes and reflects society and communities. Through her interests and work in various firms, she incorporates all of the knowledge she has gained into her academic work. She is always willing to answer questions related to the course, as well as provide feedback to help students understand the course material better. She can be reached via email (areejsh@umich.edu) or Slack

Doug Tsui (GSI)

Douglas Tsui is one of the two GSIs for this course and will be one of the liaisons for any issues that crop up during the semester. These issues can include but are not limited to, scopes of communication, questions, and website/canvas-related problems. He can be readily contacted through email or slack if needed. Douglas has had experience working and interning for a variety of different firms since starting his academic studies in architecture. One of his main interests is in the relationships people have with themselves with the spaces they inhabit and interact with on a daily basis, after working for an architecture/ interior design boutique in Hong Kong. This formulates itself in his current academic work he produces in studio as well as through a group research study.
