5.0.1 Introduction to Building Electrification

Mick Kennedy

This lesson will introduce you to the important new topic of Building Electrification and the promises it holds and challenges it faces for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

The lesson will provide an overview of important information for designers relevant to how building electrification plays a role in our overall energy demand, energy sourcing and the end use in buildings.

The lesson will provide some background / review material on the basics of electricity production, transmission and fundamentals of energy and power consumption and use.

Finally, the lesson will provide an introduction into what components of building systems can be best ‘electrified’ reducing a building’s ‘carbon footprint’ and increasing our quality of life.

5.0.2 Building Electrification Consumption Patterns and Design Opportunities

Supplemental Lesson

Mick Kennedy

This supplemental lesson provides some additional material to help expand on the introduction to Building Electrification in Lesson 5.0.1. It provides a review of some fundamentals of electricity and basics of power consumption and use in buildings. It introduces some of the key areas where building electrification has the potential for greatest impact for designers of residential architecture.
