Lesson Overview
This lesson will introduce you to the fundamentals of stair design as it relates both as a component of a code compliant egress system and also as a profound element of spatial, material, structural and experiential importance to the design of any building.
Lesson Goals
The goal of this lesson is to introduce you to the topic of Occupant Load in a space, spaces or building and how this provided the basis for calculating the required egress width dimensions for these spaces or building. The lesson will demonstrate how the building code sets Occupant Load definitions based on Occupancy groups and will walk you through the necessary calculations for determining egress width, number of required exits and how to locate them in a building plan.
Lesson 1.3.2 Egress Stair Design
This lesson will introduce you to the fundamentals of stair design as it relates both as a component of a code compliant egress system and also as a profound element of spatial, material, structural and experiential importance to the design of any building.
The lesson will also present the topic of Occupant Load (number of occupants within a given space, set of spaces or building) which the code defines in terms of allowable SF / person. The Occupant load of a space or a building becomes a key factor in calculating the required dimensions for many components of an egress system.
