4.2.1 Facades, Structure, + Balcony Systems

This lesson will present a series of case studies of design solutions for integrating balconies into facade and structural systems. Examples will include those using timber, steel, concrete and brick construction / structural and facade systems. The lesson topics will include design integration with building facades, structural support options for balcony systems and recommended methods of deploying thermal and moisture control layers in coordination with those of the building.

This lesson provides an overview about sustainable design considerations for the building façade. It includes design considerations like the window to wall ratio, light distribution in the room, and optimal placement of the ventilation openings.

Goal: The designer will learn several methods for improving a building’s performance with passive façade design strategies.
