Lesson Overview

 

This lesson will introduce a range of topics regarding building accessibility in regards to building circulation and egress. The lesson will cover dimensional requirements for stairs, ramps, doors and exiting. We will also introduce the requirements of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and its mandate for providing accessible units in multi-family housing.

Lesson Goals

 

While the topic of accessibility in architecture is both broad and deep the goal of this lesson is to give you some insight and working knowledge of how to design accessible circulation and egress components. The design of ramps and handrails will be covered with examples of design integration of ramp systems in buildings and sites. The lesson will also introduce site related accessibility topics in terms of site access and parking access. Additionally, the lesson will cover the dimensional and design requirements for public restroom facilities.
