Lesson 3.1.2

Mechanical Ventilation + Building Organization

Lesson Overview

This lesson provides information on how the most important energy conversion systems are working. A focus lies on the heat pump system because it is seen as the system of the future. Different types of the heat pump will be explained. The lesson is focused on the general technical understanding of the mechanical systems. It will provide as much information as necessary, but not more.

Air Handling describes how fresh air is provided within the building in order to keep the indoor air quality acceptable for the occupants. A classification is provided in this lesson. A focus is on the mechanical ventilation systems with heat recovery or energy exchanger and on the importance of these systems for reducing building energy demand.

Goal: The lesson introduces important systems for heating, cooling, and energy distribution. The importance of reducing the energy demand by using a heat recovery system is explained. The goal of this lesson is to convince the designer to integrate a heat recovery unit into the building. The designer will learn about the heat pump system as the system of the future.
