Lesson 1.1.1 Introduction to Building Codes and Their Role in Design and Construction

Lesson 1.1.1 will introduce you to the role that Building Codes play in the design, construction, and operation of buildings.  The lesson will provide a brief summary of the evolution of building codes in the U.S. and the development and adoption of the International Building Code (IBC) which currently regulates design and construction in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The lesson will also introduce the role that state and local building codes play in local design and construction practice. A range of provided resources will help you to understand the language of code and multitude of charts and tables within it for use in your design studio and future applications.

We will cover Code Review processes conducted by municipalities or other governing agencies that review your building design and construction documentation for compliance with building code regulations. Code Review Documents are commonly produced in architectural offices as an overview of how a given building project meets the requirements of the building code. They are typically developed to assist code review officials in reviewing building documentation.
